Founded in 1968 by David Preece, a Birmingham dental graduate from Wolverhampton, the dental surgery was initially situated in Newport at the junction of Station Road and Granville Avenue. With his young family living above the practice, he relocated to the current premises in Stafford Street in 1972. The surgery was known as D Preece and Associates for 30 years and provided only NHS dental care. In 1992, David’s son, Jonathan, also a Birmingham graduate, joined as the fourth associate alongside his father and the associates John Coombes and Ian Critchley.

A few years later, in 1999, Jonathan bought the surgery from his retiring father and renamed it Newport Dental Practice which remained a NHS practice until April 2024. We are now a predominantly private practice whilst maintaining a reduced NHS contract dedicated to exempt patients including the under 18s. Our private patients are either Practice Plan members or purely pay as you go. We take great pride in the service we have always provided and continue to provide. Most of our patients have been integral members of the Newport Dental Practice family for several decades, a fact that fills us with immense pride.
